Anybody who understood the workings of Jennings' mind would agree that it was quite natural for him to upgrade a scratch game of cricket into an inter-planetary test match between an All-World XI and a touring team from Outer Space. It was natural, too, for Jennings to climb on to the gym roof in pursuit of a lost ball... But in doing so he sparked off a chain of happenings which disrupted the smooth-flowing routine of the school for weeks to come.
There was, for example, the ludicrous rescue of the prisoner trapped in the sleeping-bag with the faulty zip-fastener; and from that there followed the catastrophic consequences of winning a pig at the village fete and having to conceal its presence on the school premises. Further links in the chain concerned the near disaster of the drawing-pin in the bath-salts and Darbishire's discovery of what the therorem of Pythagoras was really about...
