It is always safe to assume that some disaster will threaten the smooth running of the school routine soon after Jennings and Darbishire return to Linbury at the beginning of a new term. This time, however, the trouble began even before they had set foot inside the building, for the journey on the school train became a nightmare for masters and railway staff alike - thanks to Jennings' mis-directed enthusiasm.
There followed the hounding down of an inoffensive bird-watcher whom Jennings assumed to be a secret agent; and then came the mystery of the Abominable Snow-cat discovered during Jennings' mountaineering assault on the unclimbable kitchen stairs. Then there was the boy's fantastic attempts to replace Mr. Wilkins' shattered flower vase, by entering for the home-made cake competition at the village fete. In short, it was 'Just like Jennings' to disrupt the Summer term by a succession of misadventures in his own inimitable style.
