Record price for Austen novel
A rare inscribed copy of Emma by Jane Austen has sold for £180,000 at auction. The three-volume set was inscribed on behalf of Jane Austen to her friend Anne Sharp. Fact or Fiction?
A new biography of a mistress of France's King Louis XIV has been withdrawn after it was revealed a major source for it was a work of fiction. The publishers say the book about Madame de Maintenon by Veronica Buckley will be rewritten and then reissued. World Records set at Bloomsbury Auctions
In New York a pristine silkscreen of Roy Lichenstein’s Sweet Dreams Baby sold for $138,000 and in London an autograph letter written by Albert Einstein to Philosopher Eric Gutkind, in which he dismissed the idea of God as the product of human weakness and the Bible as "pretty Childish", sold for $404,000, 25 times the pre-sale estimate and four times the previous world record for a similar work by Einstein. This is again the proof that rare and significant material continues to create excitement around the world and presents real value opportunities for both buyers and sellers. (21-05-2008)

Children's picture books 'have lost the plot'
As sales fall by £3m, their first drop in a decade, publishers and bookshops want to play it safe with tried-and-trusted classics. Once upon a time, picture books made publishers very happy. They inspired and delighted millions of children around the world to love books long before they could actually read them. But now they are under threat. From Kate Greenaway's delicate 19th-century watercolours of children in smocks to Julia Donaldson's Gruffalo, Britain's reputation as a market leader for these elaborately illustrated creations is in peril. Author Salman Rushie is the bookmakers' tip to win the Booker of Booker prizes, adding to his existing two awards.
